Stars, LUK, and the DEX-less debate.
~10 min read
MapleStory Classic World assassin is the Thief 2nd job that throws stars from a claw. Searches for assassin min max build want AP (LUK vs DEX), star cost, and Critical Throw. Parent hub: classes.
DEX-less is a known Classic debate and stays Unverified for this world — community recaps after accuracy patches say the old dump-DEX trick does not pay. Damage formulas are Unverified (community). Skill percents and recharge mesos below are community/test notes, not client screenshots. Pirate and 3rd job (Hermit / Night Lord) are TBA, not playable launch lines.

Assassin is the ranged Thief. You wear a claw and throw stars. Recaps call it nimble: jump-attacks, high avoidability, Haste for the party, fewer potion hits than melee if you keep distance. The same recaps call it expensive: stars, claws, and LUK gear. It is the job people mean when they search MapleStory Classic World assassin min max build.
Lucky Seven is still the attack after 2nd job in recaps — Assassin does not gain a pack-clear skill at 2nd job. That is the class identity: two stars, one monster, forever, until a later job that this wiki treats as TBA. Drain exists as a weaker throw that can heal. Critical Throw is the min-max passive people actually want.

No Night Lord DPM sheet. No Hermit Shadow Partner four-star math as a launch plan. No Pirate. No hotlinked skill icons — the entity table is plain text until a local capture exists. Numbers that look precise (percent crit, meso/hour recharge) came from community test writeups and stay Unverified.
Create a Classic World Beginner. Finish Maple Island. Sail to Lith Harbor. Go to Kerning City. Job to Thief when the instructor accepts you (level 10 in the usual Classic pattern — confirm live). Train with a claw and Lucky Seven if you already know you want Assassin; Double Stab is the dagger path toward Bandit. At 2nd job, pick Assassin.
First-job SP in recaps: Lucky Seven if you are claw, Dark Sight for movement through packed maps, Disorder as a melee poke. Do not spend like a Bandit then expect stars to work. Stars must be in the inventory, not “in the storage you forgot.”
Recaps of Classic World tests: if you throw while airborne, you do not punch the mob in your face. That is why subway maps with jumping monsters (Stumps / Sturgeon-style packs in recaps) feel good — stars lock on inside the targeting range. If jump-throw is missing in your client, you are playing a different feel than those recaps and you will hate corridors.
LUK is the damage stat. Recaps dump most level-up points into LUK after you can wear the claw you actually use. DEX is the requirement and accuracy stat. Claws list DEX (and often LUK) to equip. Armor and hats in recaps also grew DEX requirements compared with memory. If you skip DEX entirely, you stay on lower-level claws while Bandit next to you wears the next dagger.
A community 1–30 comparison (Unverified, test formulas, no monster DEF): both jobs stacked LUK with 25 DEX. Lucky Seven’s locked mastery made early damage steadier than Double Stab. At 30, the Bandit could wear a higher-attack dagger because 25 DEX met that weapon; the Assassin could not wear the 30-DEX claw without pulling points out of LUK. Five DEX for the claw beat five more LUK on that sheet. That is the min-max: meet the next claw, then LUK. Not “never DEX,” not “DEX equal LUK.”
| AP choice | What it buys | When recaps do it | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| LUK | Lucky Seven damage, avoid, claw LUK reqs | Almost every level after gear DEX is met | Identity |
| DEX | Claw/armor reqs, accuracy | In chunks to wear the next claw | Unverified breakpoints |
| STR | Usually leftover from beginner / unused | Avoid for Assassin | Unverified |
| INT | MP | Almost never as a thrower | Unverified |
| DEX-less (0 extra DEX) | More LUK on paper | Only if a no-DEX claw exists and accuracy holds | Unverified · recaps negative |
Community thief weights look like LUK × 3.6 + DEX + STR, then weapon attack × skill percent. Test recaps also say Lucky Seven uses its own multiplier and a locked 50% mastery so Claw Mastery barely moves Lucky Seven’s floor — Mastery still feeds Drain and star recovery. Do not treat any of that as a client tooltip. Watch the damage range on your character window after each claw upgrade.
Unverified — and community recaps after Classic tests say no. Search demand for “why dexless is not viable” is real. Old-school DEX-less meant skipping DEX, wearing Maple / fan / other no-DEX weapons, and stacking primary. In Classic World recaps: accuracy rules were reverted toward vanilla after test-one complaints, but gear still asked for secondary stats. A DEX-less experiment on a Bandit used a Korean fan at 40, respected DEX into LUK, and still lost to a normal DEX dagger plus real armor (sauna robe / work gloves / snowshoes vs level-40 pieces). Bamboo hats gained DEX reqs in that recap. Maple weapons were mentioned as a possible later add, not a launch plan.
Assassin is worse to DEX-less blindly because claws list DEX. If the live shop has no DEX-less claw at your level, the build is not a build — it is an unequipped character. This page will not publish a DEX-less AP template. If Nexon ships Maple claws, revisit. Until then, meet DEX on the weapon tooltip.
Missing is free damage you did not deal. Recaps that “LUK also raised accuracy” on a Bandit do not mean Assassin can sit at 4 DEX in Sleepywood. If you miss, add DEX or a scrolled accuracy line, then go back to LUK. Quote the miss rate from the client, not from 2006.
Stars are ammo. Lucky Seven spends two per cast in recaps. Claw Mastery can refund a chance of stars (recap: 25% at max — Unverified). Recharge at a shop is cheap per star in community sheets; buying the first stacks of high-attack stars is the rich-player part. Recaps list a ladder of star attack (Subi → Wolbi → Mokbi → Kumbi → Tobi → Steely → Ilbi / Hwabi, plus Snowball / Wooden Top / Icicle variants). Exact attack and meso/star are Unverified until an NPC screenshot.
Community hour-sim (Unverified): potion spend dwarfed recharge spend. Jumping from cheap Subi-tier stars to top-end Hwabi-tier stars moved weapon attack a lot because claw attack + star attack is the weapon-attack pile Lucky Seven cares about. Fake “attack power” from mastery is smaller than real weapon attack on the claw and the stars. Scroll the claw; buy the stars you can refill without skipping hunts.
| Star topic | Community recap | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Subi-tier | Lowest attack, cheapest refill | Unverified prices |
| Wolbi / Mokbi / Kumbi / Tobi | Mid ladder | Unverified |
| Steely / Ilbi / Hwabi | High attack; refill still small vs pots in one sim | Unverified |
| Snowball / Wooden Top / Icicle | Same attack as a shop star but worse refill in recap | Unverified |
| Citizen shop (Kerning recap) | NPC “Max” selling mid-attack stars after citizen rank | Unverified quest path |
| Mastery recovery | Fewer trips to town | Unverified percents |
Citizen-rank recaps try to time shop stars before Grand Launch (October 21, 2026). That is a meso plan, not a unique skill. If the NPC or ranks differ live, ignore the day-count and look at the shop. Never buy “beta stars” off a key seller. There is no coupon box; Founder’s items mail themselves — see Founder’s Pack.
Plain-text roster — no icons this run. Percents are community/test. Confirm SP reqs in the skill window.

Lucky Seven first as Thief. After Assassin: Mastery to unlock Critical Throw, then Crit Throw, keep Booster at 1 until recasts annoy you, Haste for you and the party, a point of Critical Recovery, Drain only if you like the heal and accept the MP. Recap hour-sim said Drain saved HP pots and spent them again as MP pots, with less damage than Lucky Seven. Unverified — if your map smacks you, try Drain; if you never get hit, skip it.
When several claws share a level and base attack, recaps pick the extra crit line because Critical Throw and Critical Recovery both like crits. Always compare scrolled weapon attack first. Crafting a named slain claw is a crafting question with Unverified recipes.
Assassin: range, jump-throw, star tab, crit kit, same Haste. Bandit: dagger, shield/avoid recaps, cheaper, Savage Blow as the melee fantasy — recaps say Savage Blow is weak until mid-40s mastery. Parties want Haste from either. They do not need two Assassins for Haste.
Pick Assassin if you will keep stars stocked and you like platforms. Pick Bandit if the star economy sounds like a second job you did not ask for. Neither is “the best job in MapleStory Classic World.” Later-job S-tiers that name Night Lord assume 3rd/4th kits this wiki marks TBA.
Stay near Kerning until the claw and stars you can afford kill the map. Then follow the leveling guide. Victoria bosses on the bosses page are party content; bring Haste, not a Night Lord rotation.
